Job Summary
 

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of The Institute for Water and Health's (IWH) Water Quality Research Laboratory. 
The IWH at Georgia Southern University commits to uniting science, practice, and community funds of knowledge to implement a collective vision of safe water, sustainable environments, and resilient communities. The Water Quality Research Laboratory supports the IWH's mission through its state-of-the-art research capabilities and a strong emphasis on water research education and outreach activities, serving researchers, the public, and industry partners.

This position is time limited and 100% sponsored-funded; therefore, continued employment is contingent upon availability of grant or contract funding.


Responsibilities
 
  • Perform routine laboratory tests in water quality (microbiology and chemistry) using various laboratory apparatus and testing equipment.
  • Prepare various culture media and chemical solutions, inoculate cultures, and incubate cultures at prescribed temperatures.
  • Experience in standard field sampling methods for collecting drinking water, ambient water, stormwater, and sediment samples.
  • Arrange transportation of laboratory samples and recommend additions or repeats of tests to verify accuracy.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain the State of Georgia and National Environmental Laboratories Accreditation Conference (NELAC) certification.
  • Maintain records on tests performed, test results, methods, materials, and procedures used.
  • Oversee maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the laboratory.
  • Maintain stockroom, inventories, and purchasing of laboratory materials.
  • Train and supervise undergraduate and graduate student workers.
  • Oversee routine biosafety certifications and enforce biosafety protocols.
  • Work with Environmental Safety to coordinate hazardous waste collection and disposal.
  • Prepare technical reports and Quality Assurance Project Plans for contracts and projects.
  • Develop statements of work and technical specifications for projects.

Required Qualifications
 

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field and two (2) or more years of professional experience in a related field
  • OR Associate's Degree and three (3) years of professional experience in a related field

Required Experience

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications
 

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Water Lab Analyst license, or a Class I or II Water Operator license

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with molecular microbiological methods
  • Experience with operating analytical chemistry instrumentation
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management system
  • Experience writing technical reports, and quality assurance/quality control plans

Proposed Salary
 

$50,000 - $63,700

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis .
