FAES | Center for Food Animal Health

On the Wooster campus of OSU

Provides support  to Center for Food animal Health  (CFAH) Infectious disease animal programs, College of food animal and environmental Science (CFAES) Laboratory Animal facility, and to the CFAES Veterinary clinic in support of agricultural research and teaching.

Works As a member of the CFAH animal care  staff  to support the humane care of research animals and  ensures regulatory compliance.  Supports staff and students with research projects requiring the use of animals: poultry (turkey and chicken), swine, bovine and other  laboratory animals; provides daily animal husbandry in accordance with SOP’s and maintains records; prepares and cleans rooms and equipment used for housing and research projects; Manages and provides daily care  for  the specific pathogen free chicken flock; ensures biosecurity and integrity of flock health, Works with research personnel to facilitate animal handling and sample collection; keeps facilities in good working condition and keeps records on facility issues; maintains records of animal treatments and procedures; reports any issues involving animal care and welfare to the veterinarian; support  BL3 Ag PAAR facility animal care  requiring  specialized training, background checks; select agent registration as required

For CFAES laboratory animal facility – procures animals and maintains housing and husbandry (swine, poultry, rodent, rabbit, guinea pig, ferret) ;maintains facility and equipment ; sanitizes and prepares animal rooms, equipment and caging for projects; invoices charges for use of facility, Assist or train personnel to collect samples for research projects as required.  Train personnel in animal handling.

For CFAES veterinary support-   assist veterinarian with management of veterinary clinic ; orders supplies, maintain computer records; cleans and prepares equipment for procedures and projects; interacts with personnel to supply medications under veterinary guidance ; assists veterinarian with surgical procedures required for research project; operates sterilization equipment; orders veterinary supplies; completes documentation for regulatory compliance

All activities are covered by IACUC and AAALAC regulatory guidance. Maintain documentation of all activities in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Responds to emergency building alarms as required. Weekend and holiday rotation for animal care staff. Opportunity for overtime pay on these rotations


Additional Information:


  • $17.68 - $23.57/hr.

The offer for this position will be based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
