Job Summary

The Department of Biological Chemistry is looking for a motivated Research Lab Tech Lead to work in a laboratory studying molecular mechanisms of membrane trafficking, remodeling and repair. The applicant will help with general laboratory operations and provide technical lab support by performing complex laboratory and research related tasks. He/she will work under the general supervision of the principle investigator and senior laboratory scientists and contribute to research project(s) appropriate for his/her training level.

The successful candidate will have responsibilities in the areas listed below, with specific assignment depending on previous experience as well as interest and long-term career development goals:

Purchase lab supplies; contribute to stocking and organizing lab. Maintain lab equipment and train users in equipment operation and lab techniques.

Provide lab management support in the form of routine laboratory maintenance (inventory-keeping, preparation of stocks and buffers, dish-wash and autoclave, etc.), record keeping, and compliance with University of Michigan regulations. Act as liaison with other departments.

Assists in developing and designing research projects.  Executes experiments; translates and interprets data in the following areas:

  • Molecular biology: plasmid cloning, PCR analyses, other molecular biology experiments.
  • Mammalian cell culture including transfection and cell line selection.
  • Protein expression and purification for functional analyses and reconstitution.
  • Confocal microscopy and image analysis of fixed and living cells.
  • Preparation of cultured cells for analysis by electron microscopy.

Active engagement in the scientific mission of the laboratory, with ability and interest in reading and discussing relevant scientific literature.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry or Biology or related field with at least 2-3 laboratory research experience. Master’s degree strongly preferred. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with laboratory team members. The successful applicant will be looking to advance their training while contributing to the research output of the laboratory.
