Research Lab Technician I

Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California, Department of Medicine, is seeking a  Research Laboratory Technician I (RT-I). This position is available immediately in the Saito laboratory to study molecular and cell biology of the liver, with particular emphasis on hepatocytic innate immune and inflammatory response to various types of insults, including but not limited to viral infection, metabolic stress, and xenobiotics. Our laboratory utilizes tools of cell biology, virology, genetics, molecular biology, and systems biology.

The ideal applicant will be a hardworking, creative, and self-motivated researcher who is interested in the field of liver biology and disorders. The preferred candidate should have experience in general molecular biology, biochemistry, in vitro, and in vivo experiments. Knowledge in protein assays (Western Blotting, Immunoprecipitation, gel analysis), nucleic acids biology (such as gene cloning, PCR, RT-QPCR, RNA synthesis, DNA/RNA transfection, and extraction), microscopic analysis (immune fluorescent staining, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), light microscopy, and image analysis and processing) is a plus.

The RT-I’s main responsibilities will be to assist the Principal Investigator, Dr. Takeshi Saito, with the following:

  • Setup basic in vitro and in vivo experiments using laboratory protocols and safety guidelines
  • Handles and dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Sets up and operates standard laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records of procedures used to conduct basic experiments. Performs limited routine analysis and provides basic interpretations.
  • Prepares chemical solutions under the direction of an experienced technician.
  • Stocks and maintains laboratory supplies. Monitors inventory levels and orders or secures supplies as needed.
  • Maintains laboratory environment in orderly, operable condition.
  • Learns basic laboratory safety and, if appropriate, basic radiation or blood borne pathogen safety under the direction of the USC Safety Office and more experienced laboratory staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Contribute to the quality control of the laboratory, such as the preparation of general experimental materials, stock and maintain laboratory supplies.

Rate Information:


This position will be Non-exempt and On-Site.

The hourly rate range for this position is$21.07 to $22.00.

Other Information:


Preferred Education: Associate’s degree with specialized/technical training in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics, Biology, or in a relevant field.

Preferred Experience: 1 year of wet laboratory experience

Preferred Field of Expertise: In vitro and in vivo experiments in the field of immunology (pathogen-host interactions), general cell biology, and biochemistry.
