Summary

The Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (MCDB) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated individual to work as a Research Laboratory Technician Associate. The desired candidate will work under the guidance of the Principal Investigator in a laboratory using genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genomics/proteomics to study signaling pathways that regulate cell growth in the budding yeast. These pathways are relevant to understanding fungal virulence and diseases, including cancer.

Responsibilities*

The successful applicant will conduct and troubleshoot experiments, record and analyze the resulting data, and organize research results for publication. This person will also actively participate in lab meetings and must be willing to learn and develop to gain new knowledge and skills, establish new experimental protocols, and contribute to the completion of project goals.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Lab management (10%): Placing orders, tending to equipment, safety dispositions, EHS inspections
  • Research duties (50%): Execution of various laboratory techniques including but not limited to; Protein purification, Western blotting, HPLC, PCR, DNA cloning, microbiology techniques (culturing yeast and bacteria), and live cell fluorescence microscopy.
  • Data collection, analysis, and writing (30%): Data collection, analysis, and writing: Maintain a laboratory notebook documenting research results, generate and analyze experimental results and reports, assist assembling experimental figures and in writing of scientific manuscripts.
  • Training (10%): Train and assist undergraduate and graduate students in standard lab procedures as needed. Assist other lab members with their experiments as needed.

Required Qualifications*

High school diploma or Associate's degree and 1 year of experience. The applicant should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as strong organizational and time management skills. Must have previous research experience in biochemistry or microbiology, or preferably both. Must be willing to learn and develop new knowledge and skills, establish new experimental protocols, and contribute to the completion of project goals.

The candidate must have previous research experience in biochemistry or microbiology, or preferably both. Experience with protein expression and purification, Western blotting, and standard molecular biology/microbiology techniques (e.g. PCR, recombinant DNA cloning, etc.) is preferred.


Desired Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree in a life science discipline and 1-2 years of relevant research experience in a microbiology or biochemistry lab is preferred. Experience with protein expression and purification, HPLC, fluorescence microscopy, and standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, recombinant DNA cloning, etc.) is also preferred.


Additional Information

This is a one-year term-limited position with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance, availability of work, and availability of funding.  The position requires an in-person laboratory presence in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
