Summary

A laboratory research technician position is available in the translational research laboratory of Dr. Shilpa Kodati in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Kodati is a uveitis specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon. Our laboratory group studies autoimmune-mediated and infectious diseases of the eye including uveitis, as well as investigating the role of the gut microbiota in the development of uveitis. The goal of our work is to better understand the molecular pathways underpinning uveitis in order to facilitate more targeted therapies. Our group utilizes clinical samples and performs techniques such as single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing, proteomics, flow cytometry and in vitro immunological assays.

Responsibilities*

We are seeking a commitment from a motivated individual who enjoys collaborative translational science and desires to contribute to research in a team-based environment.
This position involves processing clinical samples, maintaining our biorepository of samples, submitting samples for single cell sequencing, performing techniques such as flow cytometry, cell cultures and in vitro immunological assays.

Specific duties include the following:

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the group including our patient recruitment coordinator and mentor junior members such as students.
  • Train new laboratory personnel, students, and collaborators. 
  • Maintain our internal biorepository of samples.
  • Oversee laboratory practices such as standardization of protocols, ordering of supplies, scientific and administrative record-keeping.
  • Comply with all regulatory, safety and infection control standards. 
  • Take leadership in maintenance of laboratory protocol and regulatory protocol compliance and development per university standards.
  • Processing of specimens and submission of samples to core facilities.
  • Performing immunological techniques such as flow cytometry, cell cultures, in vitro immunological assays.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on data analysis. 
  • Assist with manuscript preparation including preparing figures. 

Required Qualifications*
  • HS Diploma or Assoc Degree
  • 1-3 years experience required.
  • Highly motivated responsible individual with excellent communication and organizational skills.

Desired Qualifications*
  • An interest in translational and vision research. 
  • Experience in immunological techniques such as flow cytometry, cell cultures, and in vitro immunological assays.
  • BA or BS in recognized field of science related to the position supplemented with relevant laboratory experience.  

Background Screening
