A Research Laboratory Specialist Senior position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Nicole Koropatkin, in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, MI. The Koropatkin lab studies Bacteroides nutrient uptake and lipoprotein synthesis using a combination of protein biochemistry, structural biology and genetics. We are recruiting a highly motivated individual for a full-time lab research position with substantial research responsibilities. The individual in this position should have substantial background (4+ years) of experience in genetic manipulation of E. coli and Bacteroides, working knowledge of lipoprotein biosynthesis in pathways in Gram negative bacteria, and experience with MALD mass spectrometry. The position offers opportunity for growth in leadership and research skills.

The successful applicant will be able to consult the literature or other scientists to determine the course of their own experiments with input from the PI. They will participate actively in the design of research goals, approaches, and alternative approaches. They will prepare data for presentation in manuscripts and grants, particularly for collaborative projects. They will balance this research activity with functional lab supervision responsibilities, including training new lab personnel in lab protocols as needed, after being trained by PI and current lab members. The successful candidate should be able to think carefully about the experiments of others and suggest modification to their experimental design, controls, and alternative explanations of the data. Contributions to our research projects will result in co-authorship on publications whenever appropriate. Attendance at research seminars is highly encouraged.
