Summary

The Putnam Laboratory (https://www.theputnamlab.com/) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated individual for a Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate position. The selected candidate will work closely with Dr. Andrew Putnam and other members of his group on NIH-funded projects focused on creating functional vasculature in engineered tissue constructs. The primary responsibility is to manage multiple aspects of the day-to-day operations of the group, including the management of multiple IACUC-approved animal protocols, maintaining compliance with EHS lab safety requirements, and handling procurement activities. Responsibilities*

• Facilitate day-to-day research laboratory operations, including procurement and inventory of reagents and supplies.
• Manage multiple IACUC protocols (involving rodents) and serve as the point of contact for biannual IACUC inspections.
• Manage the laboratory’s IBC protocol to ensure safe usage of recombinant DNA constructs, viral gene delivery systems, and human cell cultures.
• Serve as the laboratory’s safety officer, maintaining all required documentation for annual EHS inspections.
• Facilitate animal research by the faculty, students, and postdocs in the lab by assisting with animal surgeries and post-surgical care.
• Provide technical support to a range of research projects using various techniques including cell culture, immunohistochemistry, hydrogel fabrication and characterization, flow cytometry, recombinant DNA techniques, and qPCR.

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor's degree in a molecular/cellular biology, biochemistry, physiology, bioengineering, or other life science-related discipline
• Exceptional work ethic
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• At least two years of prior research laboratory experience

Desired Qualifications*

• Master's degree with 3-5 years of relevant research laboratory experience
• Prior experience with one or more of the following:
  • animal handling and maintenance of IACUC protocols
  • simple rodent surgeries, especially subQ implant and/or tumor xenograft models
  • vascular cell biology
  • 3D cell culture
  • histology/immunohistochemistry
  • immunocytochemistry
  • confocal fluorescence microscopy
  • molecular biology (recombinant DNA, RNA interference, CRISPR/Cas, qPCR, Western blotting, etc.)

Work Locations

The Michigan Engineering Office of Biomedical Engineering operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as an on-site position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus 5 days per week. Additional Information

**This is a one-year term-limited position with the possibility of extension based upon need and funding.
