Summary

This is a posting for a position within the Department of Surgery under principal investigator Donnele Daley. Our lab investigates the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal cancers, specifically focusing on tumor immunology and mechanisms via which the microbiome influences cancer progression and response to treatment.

Responsibilities*

The research specialist will be in charge of:

  • Establishing and maintaining mouse models .This will include setting up and monitoring breeding cages, genotyping skills such as tag/tail, DNA extraction and PCR, gender determination, proper handling and restraint of mice for routine procedures (e.g., physical examination, administration of medication), observation of mice for recognition of normal and abnormal physical and behavioral changes, appropriate methods of anesthesia and euthanasia.
  • Animal surgeries: orthotopic tumor transplantation; tumor monitoring; administration of medication by oral, subcutaneous or intraperitoneal route.
  • Animal tissue dissections; tissue fixation and sectioning; immunohistochemical staining and immunofluorescent staining; digital fluorescence microscopy; fluorescent RNA in situ hybridization; confocal imaging and image analysis using software such as ImageJ.
  • The applicant is required to maintain primary 2D and 3D cell culture, single cell extraction from tissue, RNA/Protein isolation, qRT-PCR, Western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry, microscopy, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports using Microsoft office, GraphPad and Photoshop programs.
  • Maintain accurate data logs and overall smooth functioning of laboratory.
  • Managing independent projects in the lab and taking the lead on writing first author manuscripts. 

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in related field, 4-5 years of experience.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Masters in Biological Sciences or Biochemical/ Biomedical Sciences preferred.
  • At least 4-5 years of lab experience.
  • Familiarity with sterile technique for tissue culture, mouse handling, immunohistochemical techniques, microscopy, and basic biochemical assays.
  • Skills in single cell sequencing analysis and microbial 16S sequencing analysis are favored, but opportunities to learn these bioinformatics techniques will be available.

Additional Information

Work will be on-site.  Must be able to work generally during the hours of 9-5 Monday through Friday.
