Position Details:


Summary of Duties:
The Research Intern will weigh flour and perform flour analyses as directed by their supervisor within the USDA Western Wheat Quality Laboratory. They will carry out grain quality measurements and various wet chemistry tests as well. These tests involve basic chemistry and biology knowledge. The Research Intern will keep accurate records of tests being performed, the results of those tests, and will report those records in specified format to their supervisor. 

60% | Flour Analysis

  • Accurately weigh flour and record weight. Perform various flour analysis and wet chemistry tests and accurately record results.

  • Evaluate flour analysis process to improve efficiency of procedure and daily throughput of samples.

  • Report results to supervisor in the specified format. Contribute to new wheat variety release documentation.

20% | Grain Analysis

  • Weigh grain samples, perform polyphenol oxidase testing, perform Single Kernel Characterization testing, use a lab grain grinder to reduce grain particle size.

  • Improve approach of testing to increase daily sample throughput.

15% | Organize Wheat Samples

  • Under direction of supervisor, organize incoming samples for analysis from the WSU winter and spring wheat breeding programs. Accurate matching of sample names and locations with a list provided is essential.

5% | Other Duties

  • Other Duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

Masters Degree

One year experience in relevant research field of study

Monthly Salary:

$3,375 - $4,867

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
