Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC) is a National Institute of Aging P30-designated national leader in AD research with the vision to impact the lives of every patient and family dealing with Alzheimer’s in the region and across the state of Kansas through our research, education, and clinical care. We are a comprehensive center at the forefront of clinical trials, lifestyle intervention trials, drug and translational research, and basic science research. Our research enables us to also provide leading edge clinical care and support for dementia caregivers. In addition, we provide a wide variety of both public education and training opportunities for the workforce of tomorrow.
The primary role of the Research Informatics Specialist position is to analyze workflows and implement custom coded or existing information systems to improve the operational capacity of research studies, administrative operations, and other initiatives across the KU ADRC and its supported projects. The Research Informatics Specialist works collaboratively with KU ADRC Cores, KU ADRC leadership, specific project teams to evaluate and improve the data and human workflow systems used to collect, configure, analyze and disseminate KU ADRC work activities and data, and then identifies ways those systems can be optimally used to solve a problem, improve a research activity, or increase efficiency. The Research Informatics Specialist will use a variety of approaches including workflow analysis, implementation of existing technologies, custom coding, and integration of multiple systems to improve and innovate KU ADRC operations.
This is a hybrid position, therefore the role will require you to complete job duties both onsite at KUMC and virtually from a secure at home work location as determined by the supervisor.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree. A combination of education and related work experience may substitute for degree on a year for year basis. 

Work Experience: Working knowledge of one or more software languages or development environments, including API and communications functionality.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s in computer science, information technology, or related field

Work Experience:

  • Previous clinical research experience

  • Working knowledge of REDCap

  • Experience with R programming

  • Experience with electronic medical record systems (especially EPIC)

  • Applicable informatics certification through agencies such as American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) or equivalent

Job Duties:

  • Work collaboratively with all KU ADRC and affiliated personnel to evaluate programs, resources, and services, to enhance the infrastructure of the KU ADRC through user-centered design meetings, process maps, manuals of procedure, usability assessments, and revision activities.

  • Introduce, improve, or innovate data solutions between the Cores, KU ADRC leadership, specific project teams throughout the lifecycle of a project to increase efficiency.

  • Example: Create and maintain regular report for scheduling required for the flagship Cohort study, a complex, 400 person, 6 visit longitudinal study.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain project monitoring systems, including accessible dashboards, reports etc. to enable ongoing monitoring of project achievements and pressure points.

  • Example: Create a weekly report of new activity for the Cohort study

  • Enhance value of data products for the community of volunteers and participants, by creating rapid, automated reports on study findings

  • Manage all aspects of existing data procurement for investigators

  • Manage all aspects of data-related interactions with external partners, including working with data teams in this and other organizations to further scientific goals.

  • Improve and maintain all existing informatics operations including code for regular Clinical Core and ORE Core operations.

  • Create study-specific databases to ensure adequate and accurate recording of data elements required to meet established study objectives

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
