Position Description:

The Research Grants & Program Manager I  (Proposal Development Manager) provides support in the submission of grant and contract proposals to external funding sources. The position provides services that take a proposal from concept to proposal development and submission, with priority given to limited submission funding opportunities and/or proposals of strategic importance to the university as well as early-career faculty and small interdisciplinary research teams. The position will report to the Director of Research Development and Support and serve as a project manager and internal coordinator in collaboration with the director and/or independently in the development of large-scale proposals. The position will also provide backup for the director during absences and times when workloads are heavy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with researchers, research leaders and other research development staff to identify relevant funding sources.
  • Assists researchers in the development of compelling, competitive proposals by providing help navigating funding guidelines, preparing narrative outlines and by reviewing and critiquing grant narrative drafts and application materials.
  • Helps faculty with complex submissions (e.g., center grants, institutional training grants) with project management, budget conceptualization in collaboration with the PI and unit pre-award staff, identification of potential collaborators and institutional coordination of the application to the sponsor.
  • Edits and/or writes compelling text for a wide array of non-technical proposal sections as needed.
  • Assists in the development of web content such as proposal writing resources, checklists, templates and other resources by funder.
  • Assists researchers in becoming familiar with persuasive grant writing, particularly to federal agencies, through training and customized assistance.
  • Serves as back up to the Director of Research Development and Support in the posting and review of limited submissions, internal grants and other applicable tasks during absences and times when workloads are heavy.
  • Remains current in the research development field

Preferred qualification:

PhD and demonstrated success in the development of proposals to more than two major federal sponsors.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to learn new strategies and approaches.
  • Prior history demonstrating experience with budgeting and writing.
  • Ability to juggle multiple time-sensitive responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
  • Strong organizational/planning skills
  • Excellent ability to synthesize concepts and sponsor requirements.
  • Strong ability to facilitate collaborative interactions.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures
