The Bureau of Business and Economic Research invites applications for a Research Forester/Economist/Social Scientist to join their team.

Core Responsibilities:

Manage and conduct state-level primary forest products industry surveys, including:

  • Developing facility lists.
  • Contacting facilities and administering questionnaires.
  • Entering and checking mill-level data, assembling and checking summary data tables, and report writing. Expected results include: collaborative data collection and analysis with delivery of data in specified timeframes, publishable peer reviewed and technical reports, and presentations at professional meetings and conferences..
  • Conduct GIS analysis and cartographic activities with the goal of maintaining consistent quality and design standards using GIS principles and applications. Expected results include: consistent, professional and timely geospatial and cartographic products.

Conduct and coordinate state-level logging utilization studies, including:

  • Organizing a crew of 2-3 BBER employees and traveling for field work;
  • Safely collecting, entering, and analyzing data from active logging sites.
  • Preparing reports and presentations as a lead or co-author. Expected results include completing logging utilization field work, data analysis, and report preparation in a timely manner.

Other assigned duties, including but not limited to:

  • Data collection and analysis.
  • Preparing oral and poster presentations of research findings.
  • Responding to information requests.
  • Assisting with other Forest Industry Research projects.

Position Details:
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program
  • Salary for this position is $63,000 - $80,000 per year commensurate with qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master’s degree required in Forestry, Economics, Geography, Environmental Science or related field.
  • At least three years of experience in an active research program, including working as part of a team, co-authoring peer-reviewed publications, and delivering professional presentations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the timber industry, forest management, and data collection methods.
  • Effective technical writing and research skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience using GIS software such as ArcGIS to manage, manipulate, and represent data and create maps for publication.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with forestry and wood products professionals, co-workers, students, university and agency administrators, business owners, and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active participation in professional organizations.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality and accessibility practices, documentation, and relational databases (SQL).
  • Ability to perform statistical analyses and develop models.
  • Considerable knowledge of the timber industry, forest management, and data collection methods.
