Summary

The Department Biological Chemistry in Dr. Ragsdale's lab is recruiting postdoctors in the areas of three ongoing bioinorganic chemistry and biochemistry projects: (1) the mechanism of microbial methane formation and uptake by methyl-CoM reductase; (2) the mechanism of anaerobic microbial CO2 fixation involving CO dehydrogenase and acetyl-CoA synthase, & (3) Heme-, redox-, and CO-dependent regulation of mammalian heme homeostasis. The Ragsdale group is highly collaborative and is committed to a safe, diverse, and inclusive environment. They are funded by grants from NIH, DOE, and ARPA-E.

Mission Statement

Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally.  Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.

  • Excellent medical, dental and vision coverage effective on your very first day
  • 2:1 Match on retirement savings

Responsibilities*

Our research toolbox includes the use of spectroscopy (magnetic resonance, vibrational, optical), X-ray crystallography, serial femtosecond crystallography, kinetics (transient and steady state), and molecular and cellular biology. Postdoctors in the laboratory have the opportunity to gain a wide range of biochemical experience in microbiology, cell biology, enzymology, and metalloenzyme spectroscopy. Our studies are uncovering unique biochemical and bioinorganic mechanisms, novel roles of metals in biology, and new players in heme homoeostasis. In addition, this position will contribute to laboratory seminars and discussions, allowing the candidate to impact the direction of their research project and other projects within the research group. Assist in training of lab members. Contribute to preparing research for publication and ensure that the research is performed according to the best practice – in compliance with the University of Michigan and funding agency's guidelines.

Successful applicants are expected to have experience in enzyme mechanisms and/or metalloprotein spectroscopy. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and the names of three references to Dr. Ragasale at the following email address: Stephen W. Ragsdale, Department of Biological Chemistry, University of Michigan, [email protected] .

Required Qualifications*

PhD in biological sciences or related field with at least 2-3 years of laboratory research experience and have experience in enzyme mechanisms and/or metalloprotein spectroscopy. The ability to work productively in a team environment with people from diverse backgrounds, work with limited supervision to identify a broad range of techniques to achieve the project's primary goal.  The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to multi-task efficiently, work independently and be committed to research.
