Summary

The University of Michigan School of Information seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct research with Dr. Nazanin Andalibi. You will work with Dr. Andalibi on projects about emotion recognition/emotion AI (and more broadly technologies that infer sensitive information about people) and qualities such as ethics, privacy, and justice. The position is open to candidates interested in similar areas not squarely within the emotion AI landscape. You should have experience leading and publishing research projects. This Postdoctoral Fellowship is designed to support the applicant towards advancing their career via scholarly impact, mentorship, and collaboration.


Responsibilities*

  • Preparing presentations and reports
  • Contributing to grant proposal writing
  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
  • Assisting with other related activities assigned by the PI

Required Qualifications*
  • PhD completed by start date
  • PhD in Information, Computer Science, Science and Technology Studies, Communication, Social Science, Law, Policy, or other related field
  • Experience conducting and publishing research in academic venues
  • Interest in studying pressing socio-technical problems, especially those related to this project
  • Familiarity or expertise in at least one of the relevant topics to the broad project: AI incorporation in high-stakes contexts, emotion AI/emotion recognition/affective computing, privacy, AI ethics, Fairness/Accountability/transparency in AI, AI and law/policy, and AI justice.
  • Experience with qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews), participatory design, design fiction, focus groups, and other qualitative/critical methods and/or experience with quantitative research methods such as surveys and, experiments 
  • Experience managing projects from start to finish and working independently as well as collaboratively

Work Schedule

40 hours per week; some flexibility in when those work hours occur with close coordination practices.


Work Locations

You will be working onsite in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A shared office at 105 S. State St., North Quad will be provided. Hybrid work is acceptable for this role, following the UMSI Remote Work Policy and with supervisor approval. Employment outside of the United States or from a U.S. Territory is not allowable. Applicants must be eligible to be employed in the United States; sponsorship to obtain such status is not available at this time.


Additional Information

This appointment is for 12 months. Performance will be reviewed with Dr. Andalibi. There will be opportunities to renew the position for more than one year depending on funding/work availability and job performance.

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a large and vibrant interdisciplinary research community at the University of Michigan's School of Information. You will have opportunities to interact with researchers in groups such as the Social Media Research Lab, the Michigan Interactive and Social Computing group, and other colleagues and departments across the UM campus. You will also have opportunities to engage with centers such as the Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing, the Center for Social Media Responsibility, as well as units such as the Digital Studies Institute at UM.

Aside from direct one-on-one mentorship from Dr. Andalibi, the fellow will have the opportunity to receive mentorship from the designated UMSI postdoctoral mentor who is another faculty member.
