Summary

The Department of Epidemiology is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow. This position is funded by a research grant from the National Institute on Aging, which aims to investigate socioeconomic and cardiovascular sources of cross-national variation in later-life cognitive health across high-, middle-, and low-income countries using internationally harmonized data from the US Health and Retirement Study and International Partner Studies of Aging, including their Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocols.

Primary responsibilities include the design and conduct of cross-sectional and longitudinal data analyses using internationally harmonized socioeconomic, psychosocial, contextual, and cognitive data on older adults (e.g., the US Health and Retirement Study International Partner Studies and their respective Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocols), and the preparation of scientific manuscripts as lead author and co-author. The successful applicant will be expected to and supported to develop their own independent line of research in this topic area. Opportunities will be available for collaboration on a range of funded studies on the social epidemiology of cognitive aging, as well as for participation in the preparation and submission of extramural research grants.


Responsibilities*
  • Manuscript preparation: Conceptualizes and contributes to the writing of scientific manuscripts as lead author and co-author.
  • Data analysis: Designs and executes complex data analyses. Independently interprets results, including creation of data tables, visualizations, and reports for presentation.
  • Data management: Manages the organization, documentation, merging, cleaning, and storage of complex harmonized population datasets. Creates final analytic datasets.
  • Grant preparation: Assists in acquiring extramural research funding, including with writing the technical portions of grant proposals.

Required Qualifications*
  • Doctorate in epidemiology or other public health science. Applicants are expected to have met all doctoral requirements before the start of the fellowship. 
  • The successful fellow is expected to have a record of accomplishment in quantitative research, as evidenced by publications, training, and proficiency in statistical analysis. 
  • The fellow should have a career trajectory in the field of social epidemiology, cognitive aging, dementia, and/or cross-national comparative aging research, as evidenced by prior research activities and current knowledge. 
  • The successful applicant is expected to have excellent skills in data management and analysis, data visualization, written and oral scientific communication, time management and planning, and interpersonal communication.

Desired Qualifications*

Experience in working with any of the US Health and Retirement Study International Partner Studies or other population-based cohort studies of aging.


Additional Information

This position is term-limited for one year in duration from the start of the appointment, with the possibility of extension contingent on funding and performance.
