Summary

The Flow Physics and Engineering Laboratory (FPEL), headed by Professor Yulin Pan at the University of Michigan, is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Winter term of 2024. The research primarily focuses on the development of a fundamental understanding of flow physics in the ocean environment through theoretical and computational approaches. The laboratory leverages their physical understanding and prediction capability to facilitate engineering applications in ocean forecasting, ship autonomy, naval architecture and offshore construction. Postdoctoral Research Fellows in this role will focus on the research of nonlinear wave theory and ocean modeling.

The duties and expectations of this position include performing research, participating in the preparation of technical reports and papers related to research, and collaborating with other members of the laboratory engaged in related research. Postdoctoral fellows may also, participate in instructional activities, and in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students engaged in research activities.

Required Qualifications*

The successful applicant will have a Doctoral Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering or in a related area. The candidate will have a demonstrated record of individual initiative and originality in research, strong quantitative and analytical skills, and the potential to become an independent academic researcher within two to three years.
