Job Description

Position Summary

The Cordell Institute for Policy in Medicine & Law at Washington University in St. Louis seeks a full-time health policy or health data analytics research fellow for a one-year term with the possibility of an additional one-year renewal. The Cordell Institute’s mission is to pioneer an ethical, data-driven future, to promote health, and to protect people, by becoming a leading resource for research and policy regarding the use of human information in our global society to advance healthcare and beyond.

Under the supervision of the Institute’s directors and associate director, and in coordination with other departments of Washington University or external partners, the Research Fellow will perform either healthcare policy or health data analytics work, depending upon the applicant’s qualifications. Project areas may include work in health data analytics, economic health policy, health data policy, or policy interventions in healthcare or population health. Once selected, the Fellow will work with The Institute to define the scope and specifics of the project(s) and to identify deliverables.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of faculty, designs a research project or projects.
  • Manages their own project, which should lead to publication.
  • Prepares and submits research papers, and related writings such as op-eds, with excellent writing skills and in a timely manner.
  • Presents work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills.
  • Maintains conscientious and ethical discharge of research responsibilities and conforms to ethical standards in research and writing.
  • Maintains collegiality and builds working relationships with students, colleagues, and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Attends and participates in Cordell Institute events.
  • Attends periodic Cordell Institute staff meetings and participates in other Cordell Institute projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least two years of post-graduate studies in a healthcare policy and/or health data analytics related field.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Outstanding research and writing skills.
  • Outstanding oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to make oral presentations.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Self-disciplined, able to work independently with minimal day-to-day oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain working relationships with students, colleagues and external partners and to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree such as a master’s degree or post-baccalaureate degree, Ph.D. or M.D., in a related field, with demonstrated experience in healthcare policy and/or data analytics.
  • Demonstrated publication(s) in law, policy, or scientific journals.

Salary Range

$53,760 - $55,000 annually commensurate with experience and qualifications.
