Job Description Summary:
The Research Faculty is responsible for research activities for medical education within the department of Family & Community Medicine.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
  • MD, DO, PhD or equivalent
  • If physician, American Board of Family Medicine board certified or eligible
  • If physician, unrestricted license to practice medicine
  • If physician, federal narcotics and controlled substance number
  • If physician, hospital privileges
  • Record of scholarly collaborative publications in recognized peer-reviewed research journals
  • Record of oral presentations
  • Previous successful generation of grants and extramural funding
  • Experience searching, retrieving, analyzing, synthesizing, summarizing, reporting and defending scientific information
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Skilled with computer applications and statistics
  • Ability to work independently toward completion of grant applications and professional journal submissions
  • Collaborative interpersonal and management skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • If physician, MPH, PhD or research experience
  • Experience in family medicine education
  • Interest and experience in primary health care processes and outcomes
  • Training in psychology, social psychology human factors, primary care clinical research, health care administration or public health
  • Ability to work with a research team with interests in women’s health and maternal health, rural health, medical education and primary health care delivery
  • Experience in a community-based medical school environment
  • Experience with concepts of evidence-based medicine


Job Duties Outlined:

Research and other Scholarly Activities

  • Develops personal research agenda
  • Develops, writes, implements and oversees grants and contracts that contribute to the research development of the department
  • Assists in the research and/or other scholarly activities of students, residents, and faculty.  These duties may include consultation and/or participation in:  concept development, obtaining necessary funding, literature search including filtering and analyzing scientific information, study design and methods,           application for human subjects review, data collection, entry, manipulation, and data analysis, interpretation, and  writing, editing and assembling information for presentation or publication
  • Develops research education programs for students, residents, and faculty, individually or in groups.  These duties may include:  assessing the need, planning the curricula, implementing the program, and evaluating its effectiveness,
  • Collaborates with medical students, family medicine residents and faculty to advance the research mission of the department and campus.  Theses duties may include:  writing, editing, preparation and review of manuscripts,   development of surveys, and development of data bases, development and implementation of evidence based journal club
  • Participates in institutional committees and activities necessary for the conduct of research at the campus and school-wide levels
  • Reports on research and scholarly activities at professional scientific meetings and through publications
  • Works to develop data bases, including EHR patient care data, that can be used for research
  • Supports practice-based research network operations

Medical Education

  • Supports KUSM-W expansion of first and second year students through clinical teaching and small group sessions
  • Supports medical education activities on the Family Medicine clerkship, rural rotation, subinterships and electives including evidence-based medicine
  • Supports residency program research and scholarly activities
  • Supports continuing medical education activities
  • Assists standardized patients, OSCE and CSA projects
  • Assists with PBL, CBCL and SER week education
  • Presents clinical medicine and medical education topics, including research and scholarly activity instruction for residency conferences and physician continuing medical education courses
  • Assists medical student and residents on oral presentations
  • Teaches courses or modules on research and scholarly activity

Patient Care, if physician

  • Sees patients one to six half days per week
  • Shares in on-call rotation schedules for nights, weekends and holidays with other faculty
  • Provides supervision for residency offices
  • Helps cover call, inpatient care and resident supervision in absence of other faculty

Other

  • Performs other administrative, educational, and patient care duties upon request of the chair
  • Assists in promotion of research and culture of research in family medicine and KUSM-Wichita
  • Provides counsel to the Chair on matters related to research and scholarly activity
  • Serves on department, campus and school research committees at the direction of the chair
  • Serves as the department’s representative in areas of research at the direction of the chair
  • Assists in fiscal oversight of department research activities at the direction of the chair
  • Assists in development of outcomes and translational research
  • Works with community partners on funded projects such as program evaluation
  • Teaches MPH or other classes as approved by the DFCM chair
