Department of Bioengineering

Stanford Bioengineering is a dynamic and rapidly growing department within the Stanford Schools of Engineering and Medicine . For more than a decade, Stanford Bioengineering has sought to advance bioengineering as a fundamental discipline grounded in basic sciences, powered by unique engineering concepts and principles and capable of realizing many diverse applications. Our community ranges broadly from world class faculty and students to vibrant alumni and staff and includes some of the world's most successful leaders in bioengineering technology and business. Our staff stand shoulder to shoulder with faculty and students to enable cutting-edge research providing innovative solutions to global challenges.

What is the Mobilize Center?

The Mobilize Center is a Biomedical Technology Resource Center (BTRC) funded through the National Institutes of Health. It was created with the vision of enabling the research community to use mobile technology, such as 2-D video and wearable sensors, and other large-scale datasets to quantify movement biomechanics, extract insights about conditions that reduce mobility, and advance precision rehabilitation. The Center is developing new software tools, data-sharing resources, and training programs to achieve this vision. The Center includes faculty, research staff, operations staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students from several departments.

What is the Restore Center?

The Restore Center is one of six centers that form the Medical Rehabilitation Research Resource Network, organized under the National Institutes of Health’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Its mission is to accelerate the use of mobile technology, such as from smartwatches and smartphone video, for real-world assessments of movement and factors affecting movement. As a national resource, the Restore Center provides pilot project funding, workshops, and other training and infrastructure to advance this research. The Center includes faculty, research staff, operations staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students from several departments.
