The Byrne Lab at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Ophthalmology department is looking for a highly skilled and innovative Research Engineer III with specialized expertise in extracorporeal perfusion techniques.

The ideal candidate will have a Masters in Biomedical Engineering, with a strong background and hands-on experience in cardiopulmonary medical devices and a proven track record of scientific excellence. Expertise in machining/fabrication, Solidworks, AutoCAD, and in vivo (including GLP animal models) and in vitro laboratory testing is required.



Job Summary

Designs, fabricates, and maintains research instrumentation and develops conceptual project design and instrumentation, software programs, and data collection methods. Assists with conducting research. Oversees research projects and writes and presents results reports at conferences.


Essential Functions 

As a key member of our interdisciplinary research team, the successful candidate will be responsible for designing, executing, and analyzing experiments involving the perfusion of biological tissues or organs outside the body. This role involves developing and optimizing perfusion methodologies, maintaining state-of-the-art perfusion systems, and collaborating closely with other scientists, including the lead Research Scientist, to advance our understanding of physiological processes and disease mechanisms.


Physical Effort 

Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, as well as lift and maneuver heavy equipment.
