Job Description


Under general supervision, the Research Engineer I evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific or engineering research techniques, procedures, and criteria to make moderate adaptations and modifications to research assignments. Performs research involving conventional types of plans, investigations, systems, structures, or equipment. Works with research team to devise new approaches to problems encountered.

In particular, the Building Energy Performance Analyst works as part of a team which is conducting building energy use analysis/analytics, improving methodologies for diagnostic and quality control of energy consumption patterns. Perform measurement and verification (M&V) activities, energy data quality assurance, and determine energy and cost savings for Continuous Commissioning (CC®) and energy management projects as assigned. 


  • Plans and conducts engineering research requiring independent judgement in the selection, and moderate adaptation and modification of standard engineering and scientific techniques.
  • Designs, analyzes, builds, and tests special purpose equipment and/or instrumentation for research purposes in field of expertise.
  • Performs research assignments involving conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment which may involve complex functions or features.
  • Applies an analytical approach to assist with development of a solution to of a variety of problems.
  • Demonstrates and applies thorough understanding of engineering methods, research protocols, assessment instruments, and data interpretation.
  • Designs and performs engineering experiments, tests, and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance.
  • Coordinates activities of engineering functions and encourages interchange of information, ideas, and techniques among various engineering fields.
  • Reviews and evaluates results and conclusions of research projects.
  • Analyze building energy performance through energy patterns, weather and operation schedules, time series data analysis processing
  • Prepare reports on energy data quality assurance, energy analysis, and energy savings determination for building energy efficiency project
  • Research on developing analytical tools to improve M&V processes/methodologies
  • Development of HVAC air-side simulations
  • Perform other duties as required in the ESL energy efficiency projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • No prior experience

What is helpful:

  • Preferred Master of Sciences in Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering degree with HVAC background
  • Develop basic building performance simulations in DOE2 or ePlus or DB or IESVE
  • Advance computer programming in Phyton Language and VBA for Excel.
  • Experience on data analytics methodologies application
  • Computer Programming skills, Intermediate knowledge, of VBA or Python
  • Data analytics methodologies and statistics fundamentals

  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on research data and findings.
  • Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research projects.
