Job Description


The Research Development Officer, under direction, provides advice to individual faculty and other PI-eligible investigators on funding opportunity announcement (FOA) requirements, with a focus on federal grant opportunities. Provides advice on writing grant applications responsive to FOAs, with attention to the review criteria and the application guide. Advises on elements of competitive grant applications and provides support in proposal narrative development, review, critiquing, and editing.


Responsibilities:

  • Prepares external funding applications. Works in consultation with faculty in the preparation and writing of proposals to competitions at the federal, state, and local level (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOD, and DOE) and provides insight during the proposal and grant writing process to ensure that the researcher's objectives and goals are clearly visible to grant reviewers.
  • Interprets grant proposal requirements/PI eligibility, and creates timelines for proposal development.
  • Develops tools and guidance documents related to proposal development.
  • Puts together proposal development plans to clarify faculty and staff roles and ensures open communication in multidisciplinary efforts during the proposal writing stage.
  • Provides external funding search help as requested. Facilitates planning and linkages with existing funded projects or research efforts.
  • Develops a funding calendar and maintains the funding database.
  • Creates and updates college resources for research faculty. Prepares and maintains written boilerplate information related to the college, centers, departments, and university.
  • Develops and maintains standard proposal formats for grants. Maintains and updates the Engineering Research Development Services webpage to serve as a useful tool for faculty/staff/students within the college. Keeps abreast of federal and state funding agency priorities and initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Experience:

  • Three years of experience in developing grant proposals and writing on science/engineering topics.

Preferred Education:

  • PhD or Master's degree is preferred.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience developing or writing proposals to federal, state, or private agencies.
  • Experience working with university research administration, sponsored research services offices.
  • Graphics development experience or knowledge.
  • Experience writing on scientific topics.
  • Working experience in engineering.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of standard office equipment and software applications such as Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
