Research & Dev Engineer 1 for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering / Pratt School of Engineering

Occupational Summary: 

Provide basic professional engineering services by performing a variety of technical duties involved in planning, design, construction, alteration, and testing related to electrical, electronic, biomedical, and/or mechanical engineering fields according to established procedures or instructions in support o f research and development activities.

Work Performed

  • Perform basic professional engineering duties according to established procedures or instructions to design, develop, construct, and test specialized instruments, equipment, apparatus, and systems for the development of engineering projects, the solution of engineering problems, and other research and development activities. Provide engineering assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty and student researchers and to staff members for resolution of special problems; demonstrate techniques for operating specialized equipment.
  • Provide electronic and computer support for interfacing analog experiments with digital computers; integrate analog and digital hardware with computer software in system development.
  • Collect information and data through observation, experimentation, and various other methods; maintain technical files and manuals of information. Recommend and procure electrical, mechanical, biomedical, video and optical equipment appropriate for laboratory or project needs; maintain records of expenditures.
  • Administering a Qualtrics form to solicit TA interest and then using that data to develop a TA assignment plan each semester. Collecting information from faculty to identify TAs for award recognition.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety and efficacy requirements. Perform routine maintenance on components, apparatus and systems; troubleshoot problems and perform repair work as needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized laboratory spaces, resetting multiple times per day, as needed, between lab sessions. Monitor stockroom and class lab kits and restock as needed. Maintain central lab schedule and calendar. Set up (and store) lab equipment and materials for weekly experiments.
  • Coordinate Teaching Assistant office hour schedules (assign to appropriate lab space, add to central lab calendar, post schedule).
  • Work with the Laboratory Manager and faculty to identify and assign Teaching Assistants each semester. Review, approve, and sign biweekly timecards for Teaching Assistants

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work requires a thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program in an Engineering science or a related natural science such as Physics or Chemistry. Due to professional exemption, equivalent experience cannot be substituted for bachelor's degree.
