Job Summary
 

The Research Data Scientist (RDS) will work as a technical research staff member at the DSI with the primary responsibility of research focused on DSI’s efforts at the intersection of AI, Data, Medicine, and Health. This role will collaborate with the broader research programs and faculty labs at the DSI. This position will particularly focus on the development of MRI-based breast cancer risk prediction models and investigating modern computer vision and deep learning techniques' effectiveness on MRI-based breast cancer risk prediction. The Research Data Scientist will provide mentorship to Data Science Clinic student clinic teams. This role reports to the Director of Research Programs and Strategy at the DSI.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts an independent research program in the RDS area of specialty as well as disseminate and publish these results.

  • Plans, executes, facilitates, and advances medical AI research projects.

  • Leads data analysis and data management on a small portfolio of research projects.

  • Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-authors/authors scientific research manuscripts. Provides peer review of grant applications and scientific manuscripts.

  • Mentors and supports graduate and undergraduate student teams within the UChicago Data Science Institute Clinic.

  • Supports the ongoing education, training and consulting programs at the UChicago Data Science Institute.

  • Delineates new directions of research, performs research and writes papers.

  • Presents work at scientific meetings.

  • Conducts data acquisitioning and cleaning.

  • Facilitates collaborations among the DSI research groups and performs research and writes papers as part of collaborative research projects.

  • Collaborates on development of new research projects with academic and community-based organizations.

  • Trains and mentors DSI research personnel.

  • Designs and evaluates statistical models and reproducible data processing pipelines using expertise of best practices in machine learning and statistical inference. Provides expertise for high level or complex data-related requests and engages other IT resources as needed. Partners with other campus teams to assist faculty with data science related needs.

  • Guides staff or faculty members in defining the project and applies principals of data science in manipulation, statistical applications, programming, analysis, and modeling.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics or related STEM field.

Experience:

  • Strong background and established track record in machine learning, computer vision and medical research.
  • Strong scientific publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences in the areas of computer vision and medical research.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Deep learning, computer vision, cancer research, and medical imaging.
