Research Data Engineer (remote)

The integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV) at the University of Virginia seeks an iTHRIV Data Engineer to work with iTHRIV Informatics and Analytics Concierge Services to assist health researchers asking analytical questions of complex clinical and research datasets. They design sophisticated custom data management and analysis workflows to support University translational research projects. They design data collection, harmonization, cleaning, and organization, and plan for an integrated data flow for analytics pipelines. They train research data scientists, student workers, and volunteers in the use of iTHRIV informatics tools. The iTHRIV Analytics Concierge Services supports diversity, equity, and inclusion (“Inclusive Excellence”) internally and in customer-facing interactions.

  • Understand all phases of the analytic process including data collection, preparation, modeling, evaluation, and deployment.
  • Explore and examine data from multiple disparate sources and design a plan for harmonization.
  • Establish links across existing data sources and find new, interesting data correlations.
  • Encourage inclusion of health equity variables in iTHRIV supported analyses.
  • Stay apprised of all assigned initiatives, providing reporting and analytics that will allow the researchers to design informed, data-driven data science models.
  • Visualize and report data findings creatively in a variety of visual formats that appropriately provides insights to the stakeholders.
  • Under general supervision, formulates and defines analytic scope and objectives through research and fact-finding.
  • Develop documentation and training materials around data sources and available iTHRIV and CTSA analytics tools, platforms, and services, particularly pertaining to clinical informatics.
  • Assist with architecting systems that establish links across existing clinical and research data sources.
  • Consults with research teams to help formulate or clarify analytic scope and objectives for specific University research projects. 
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master's Degree
Experience: Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in clinical data collection or in a clinical setting.
  • Experience in clinical informatics.
  • Programming knowledge in Python, SQL, R.
  • Degree in computer science, systems engineering, or data science.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
