Job Summary

The Harvard Center for Mass Spectrometry seeks a Research Core Scientist II - Mass Spectrometrist.  The successful candidate will work in the laboratory preparing samples for proteomics analysis, running them by mass spectrometry, analyzing the data, and preparing reports. They will also perform basic troubleshooting of instruments. This position involves working closely with a highly diverse group of scientists and researchers across the University. The Mass Spectrometrist will report to the Senior Director of the Harvard Center for Mass Spectrometry.


Position Description

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Evaluate and process incoming proteomics samples. Consult with researchers to understand the aims of their project and determine which workflows are necessary to address the desired questions.
  • Analyze data using Proteomics software and generate reports for researchers.
  • Communicate results to researchers with a highly variable proteomics/mass spectrometry knowledge base.
  • Prepare complex biological materials for mass spectroscopic analysis using a wide range of protocols and techniques including digestion, deglycosylation, lysis, precipitation, and TMT labeling.
  • Maintain, calibrate, monitor instrument performance, and run samples on mass spectrometers.
  • Manage LIMS (laboratory information management system), assist researchers with project submission, track project status, and prepare complex, multi-stage, project invoices.
  • Manage instrument service contracts, supplies/reagent inventory, and consumables ordering to ensure the core is properly stocked at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field with 5+ years of relevant work experience .

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills including the ability to convey complex, technical information to researchers of all levels

Working Conditions

  • Laboratory Setting.  This position may work in the proximity of biological, chemical, radiological, and other hazards.
  • This is an on-campus position.
