The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a RESEARCH COORDINATOR to enhance the School of Engineering's (SOE) research enterprise through expert, on-going technical direction and guidance to faculty, staff, and graduate students; and to assist the Associate Dean for Research and Director of Administration and Fiscal Affairs with issues related to externally sponsored research activities. This position requires a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of University fiscal and research agreement policies, SOE expertise and resources, federal and other agency regulations related to externally-funded (sponsored) research, excellent working knowledge of myriad funding agency-specific guidelines relative to sponsored research, and the use of substantial judgment in relating information to circumstances.   This position is Remote/Hybrid eligible.




  • Provide technical assistance to faculty, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students relative to all aspects of proposal development, from analysis of the RFP to extract requirements, to the initial stages of proposal planning and budget development, through proposal submission to the funding agency - requires effective communication skills, expert knowledge and the ability to advise personnel of essential budgetary requirements to cover costs associated with proposed work, expert knowledge of agency requirements and technical skills to navigate various electronic proposal platforms. Provide rule-driven copyediting (language, mechanics, and conformance to guidelines of publisher or funding agency) for research proposals.
  • Coordinate the strategic development of large proposals (multi-year, multi-investigator projects in excess of $500K/year); identify senior participants and research partners, both internal and external to the University (e.g., other universities, national laboratories, private industry); establish submission timeline; develop matrix of requirements. Participate in strategic planning to identify areas of strength to capitalize on research capabilities, take appropriate actions to align research expertise with opportunities, anticipate problems from a broad, interactive perspective, and address them proactively.
  • Coordinate and review subrecipient documentation required by sponsor and by UAB, to include SOW, authorized letter of collaboration and/or cost share commitment, detailed budget, budget justification, and supplementary documents. Analyze RFPs and proposals for Export Control restrictions, which govern how certain information and technologies can be released to non U.S. citizens; identify and track proposals with Export Control restrictions - requires scientific literacy and thorough understanding of the various federal regulations governing Export Control, the violation of which could result in civil and criminal penalties for the individual and the university of up to $1 million per violation, as well as imprisonment of up to 10 years.
  • Review research proposals along agency RFP/solicitation guidelines, as well as University guidelines, to ensure that technical proposal meets agency requirements; budgets align with statement of work; costs are allowable under OMB A-21; cost-sharing commitments, if any, have been obtained and approved.
  • Identify and disseminate funding opportunities for SOE faculty; facilitate collaborative arrangements with internal research partners (i.e., faculty from SOE or other UAB schools and/or research centers) and with external research partners (i.e., other universities, national laboratories, private industries).
  • Provide ongoing updates and information regarding the status of research activities for the Associate Dean for Research, the Director of Administration and Fiscal Affairs, and Department Heads. Serve as liaison with deans, department heads, faculty, senior administrators, external research partners, and funding agency representatives to facilitate collaborative research activities and to clarify procedures and regulations during proposal development stage. Advise senior participants of essential budgetary and compliance requirements. Facilitate the resolution of sponsored research-related issues referred by departmental personnel and/or university research administrators.
  • May assist with preparing and processing post-award actions such as invention disclosures, budget revisions, no-cost time extensions, change in project personnel, addition or elimination of sub-awardee participants, preparation and submission of quarterly and annual project reports.  Draft research agreements and memorandums of understanding, including intellectual property clauses with potential funding organizations.
  • Participate in the ongoing examination of SOE research metrics to facilitate strategic planning and decision-making by SOE leadership; metrics include proposals submitted awards.

  • (Annual Salary:  $63,875  -  $103,800)

     

    Qualifications

     

    Bachelor's degree in a related field and eight (8) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Certified Research Administrator (CRA) preferred.
