The Department of Medicine’s Division of Nephrology has an excellent opportunity for a Non-Permanent , Full-Time Research Coordinator to lead the management of a clinical research program on treatment practices and end-of-life care for patients with kidney disease.

The purpose of this position is to lead the conduct and management of a clinical research program on treatment practices and end-of-life care for patients with advanced kidney disease. The research program involves 1-2 concurrent projects involving clinical trials to test novel interventions that support clinical decision-making and treatment of advanced kidney disease to improve treatment outcomes among diverse local and national patient, caregiver and provider populations

The Research Coordinator will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI). He/she requires experience with clinical trials, survey and qualitative methods. He/she will support the PI with implementation and oversight of research studies and will be responsible for: development of and adherence to study protocols; development and administration of study instruments; subject contact, recruitment and follow-up; data collection, management and analysis; completion of progress reports and dissemination of findings; and compliance with the policies of the Institutional Review Boards (IRB), University of Washington (UW), VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and funding sponsors (i.e. NIH)

The UW has long been the place for kidney research. It is the home of the first dialysis access that made maintenance dialysis possible in this country, and was integral in establishing the first outpatient dialysis program in the world. This position directly supports a research program that is crucial to maintaining the UW as a leader in improving the lives of patients with kidney disease.

Position responsibilities

Research Activities - 70%
The Research Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the implementation of multiple concurrent projects involving pilot and clinical trials. The incumbent will prepare study protocols including: devising recruitment and retention strategies, preparing study instruments; and, developing data collection and management methods. The incumbent will conduct research activities, including: identifying and recruiting subjects; tracking and serving as a liaison to subjects; administering interventions and study instruments; performing chart reviews; inputting survey data; ensuring data accuracy; and, preparing data for analysis. The incumbent will coordinate preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations, including: conducting background literature reviews; contributing well-written content for manuscripts and presentations; coordinating co-author contributions; and managing drafts and submissions.

Research Management - 20%
The Research Coordinator will be responsible for management activities across 1-2 concurrent projects, including: communicating and coordinating with other study sites; monitoring progress and ensuring that milestones in recruitment, data collection and analysis are met in a timely; identifying and addressing research and programmatic issues; responding to data queries; monitoring and allocating resources; and presenting progress updates to the Principal Investigator, study team members, research partners, and funding sponsors. The incumbent will manage timely payment of subject incentives; research-related reimbursements; and, post-award expenditures.

Lead Responsibilities:
The Research Coordinator will ensure study timelines are adhered to and goals are met, and that activities are compliant with IRB, UW, VAPSHCS and funding sponsor requirements.

Research Compliance - 10%
The Research Coordinator will monitor research activities and ensure compliance with the IRB, UW and VAPSHCS and funding sponsor requirements; develop new and submit IRB and protocol modifications when necessary; and prepare and submit annual renewal paperwork.

Minimum requirements:

Master’s degree in life sciences, public health, or other field and at least 1 year of related experience; equivalent experience may substitute for degree requirement

Additional requirements:

• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong scientific writing and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills, detail-oriented, adept at managing multiple tasks and timelines.
• Project management, longitudinal planning, and goal and priority setting.

Desired qualifications:

• Substantial experience in clinical trial methods.
• Sensitivity to the psychosocial aspects of conducting research on end-of-life care and treatment with forms of artificial life-support, such as dialysis.
• Comfort and experience with interacting with patients with serious illness for clinical research purposes, and championing and integrating research activities within busy clinical and patient care settings.
• Familiarity with research policies and guidelines at the University of Washington and VA Puget Sound Health Care System, including IRB process and budget management.
