Description of Work Unit
The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University is a large academic and research department in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering.  We currently have nineteen faculty members, eighty graduate students, over seventy full-time researchers and postdoctoral fellows, and an outstanding and dedicated support staff, that comprise one of the most research-active units at the university.  The department conducts more than $14M in externally sponsored research each year and is nationally ranked at the top of its field.

Position Summary
This position will specialize in sample material preparation and processing of filter samples for the measurement of atmospheric ice nucleating particles (INPs) using CSU’s Ice Spectrometer (at the Dept. of Atmospheric Science, Atmospheric Chemistry). The results are the production of INP spectra from samples taken in 2022 during the NSF-funded Bioaerosols and Convective Storms campaign (PIs Dr. Russell Perkins and Dr. Leah Grant). The hourly employee will work under Dr. Tom Hill oversight.  
Position Minimum Qualifications
B.Sc. in chemistry, biology, or engineering. Practical experience in a laboratory setting.  
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with analytical equipment and proper handling of environmental samples of aerosols and soil. Experience with software applications (Excel, Matlab, Labview). Knowledge of environmental collection of aerosols, and laboratory practices in order to maintain a sterile, contamination-free working space.

INP analysis: Samples are filters that are rinsed in water to remove particles, and then measurements are made on these suspensions to calculate the number of ice nucleating particles present, the proportion that are sensitive to heat and the proportion that are organic. This involves operation of the CSU Ice Spectrometer. Processing of raw data, and compilation of data summaries.
