Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and four or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Grade EF Salary minimum $47,476

Preferred Qualifications

Greater than five years work experience is preferred. Masters level coursework or advanced training will be considered as a substitute for years of experience. Bachelor's degree or higher in botany, plant ecology, wetlands ecology, conservation biology, or related science.

  • Strong plant identification skills including wetland species.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Kentucky botanical communities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with no major violations in the last 5 years.
  • Ability to periodically travel within the state and region for field and office work, occasionally for extended periods.
Position Description

We have an immediate opening for an experienced botanist, or ecologist with strong botany experience, to support our growing restoration design and research work. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The new employee will have the opportunity to pursue professional licensure, certification, or continued professional development.

The Stream Institute is an applied and interdisciplinary research group at the forefront of innovative stream and wetland restoration throughout the eastern United States. The ideal candidate will add to an experienced team working on all aspects of restoration projects, from initial site assessments to restoration planting design, monitoring, and post-project appraisals. Through several active grants, the Stream Institute is presently engaged in research to improve industry-wide design and monitoring practices with the goal of increasing the value and resilience of ecological restoration.

Duties will be varied with an initial focus on the evaluation of forest quality in areas with potential restoration projects. Work will include a mixture of fieldwork and self-directed office work This is a grant-funded position, renewable pending funding.

Essential Duties

  • Perform general vegetation survey and vegetation community mapping
  • Mapping invasive/ exotic species
  • Prepare reports documenting plant communities and ecological conditions.
  • Develop planting plans for stream and wetland restoration projects
  • Develop site maintenance plans for seeded herbaceous layers and planted shrubs and trees.
  • Develop pest management plans for I/E species control
  • Assist or lead wetland delineations
  • Provide field assistance, including equipment maintenance, surveying, and other duties as required 
  • Provide QA of reports prepared by others.
  • Technical reporting and data visualization

Demonstrated capabilities in the following areas is strongly preferred:

  • An interest in ecosystem restoration and conservation is essential.
  • Experience with plant identification in Kentucky and nearby States.
  • Knowledge of and experience with vegetation monitoring sampling methodologies.
  • Experience with wetland delineations and jurisdictional determinations
  • Certifications such as Professional Wetland Scientist or permits for endangered species collection
  • Experience with compiling/presenting field data, writing reports, and preparing figures to both support design and permitting efforts

Additional skills that would improve a candidates fit with the current need:

  • Experience with VIBI measurement and analysis protocols
  • Experience with wildlife surveys and habitat assessments
  • Exposure to stream and wetland restoration design methods
  • Experience working with federal and state resource and regulatory agency personnel
  • Experience with field survey methods including the use of GPS/GNSS receivers
  • Experience in ArcGIS Pro
  • Experience managing large datasets, for example: hydrologic time series, aerial imagery
  • Experience with developing static or interactive maps for professional reporting using ArcGIS products.
