KS Biological Survey

Position Overview

The Kansas Biological Survey (KBS) and Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) at the University of Kansas (KU) conduct basic and applied research that addresses state, regional, national, and global environmental issues. At the KBS, this position will involve developing and operating an analytical laboratory to enhance infrastructure and capacity for research on nutrients in the environment, as well as assisting the director of KBS with implementing her research program and other administrative tasks. At the KGS, this position will involve laboratory management and participation in executing experiments/research. Occasionally, this position may require travel and non-standard hours in a work week.

Job Description

70% Research Coordination and Management at the KS Biological Survey
Oversees daily research operations in the KBS director’s research laboratory and a shared use analytical laboratory to include running and maintaining analytical equipment for nutrient analyses, ordering supplies, training students on operating analytical equipment, and entering and managing data. The research coordinator will also help coordinate and participate in field work associated with the director’s research program, and contribute to deliverables such as agency reports and publications.
20% Lab Management at the KS Geological Survey
Coordinate and participate in processing and analyzing soil and sediment samples for physical and chemical properties.

10% Other Administrative Assistance

Participates in other activities to assist the director of KBS as needed. 

Required Qualifications

Qualifications will be evaluated by the content and quality of the written application materials and relevant experience.

  • A Ph.D. in a soil-related discipline and 1 year experience running analytical equipment for nutrient analyses in plants and soil -OR- a Master’s degree with  3 years of experience running analytical equipment for nutrient analyses in plants and soil.
  • Previous lab management experience (ordering supplies, student training, maintenance and operation of standard lab equipment).
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills as demonstrated by application materials, interviews, and reference checks.
  • Proficiency with Windows/Microsoft Office computer software (Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Familiarity with lab safety policies and procedures.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with plant and soil analyses for nutrients using gas chromatography and spectrophotometry.
  • Knowledge of quality control methods for plant and soil nutrient analyses.
  • Budget management.
  • Experience working in a university research environment.
