The Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) is seeking a Research Consultant to work as a Data Manager. This position will independently support research activities by faculty and fellows, liaise with UW data systems and organizations to facilitate HIPRC research, manage qualitative and quantitative data analysis needs for research studies at HIPRC, and support educational initiatives through data analysis. The Research Consultant will work directly with faculty investigators, post-doctoral fellows and scientific collaborators to achieve the research study aims. This position provides high-level advanced data analysis support. The Research Consultant will report to the HIPRC Manager with a strong matrix relationship to the Director of the Research Core.

The Research Consultant facilitates the design, implementation, and maintenance of the information infrastructure within HIPRC. This position is primarily responsible for establishing procedures for data analysis, developing and implementing data management plans, and creating data collection instruments. The Research Consultant will provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for research grant proposals and other research projects . The Research Consultant must have sophisticated writing skills to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with faculty and fellows from different disciplines and from different training backgrounds both in person and via email. This individual must also keep abreast of new research in statistical techniques and new developments in statistical and applications programming, and be able to advise scientist colleagues on the best methods for particular projects and analysis.

The Research Consultant role contributes to the overall success of research projects at HIPRC, with the potential to lead to future grant opportunities benefitting both HIPRC and UW. The HIPRC brings significant research funds to Harborview and the University while also increasing awareness and establishing the UW and Harborview as cutting-edge research institutions in injury cause and prevention.  The collaboration of pediatric, adult and global health faculty and programs is representative of the collaborative nature of the University's research programs. HIPRC has advocated for preventions of traumatic brain injury and other areas that have led to policy changes across the country.

The Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) is a worldwide leader in injury cause and prevention research. Founded in 1985, HIPRC is a multidisciplinary research center supported by the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.  HIPRC faculty and staff are devoted to conducting research, education, and community outreach aimed at diminishing the personal impact of trauma and broadening the effectiveness of injury prevention and treatment programs regionally and nationally. The HIPRC aims to reduce the harm from injury and violence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Data Management 100%

• Manage the design, implementation, and maintenance of the information infrastructure within HIPRC in support of Research projects
• Establish procedures for the entry, cleaning, linking, appending, merging, and preparing of data for analysis
• Develop and implement data management plans and data sharing agreements for individual projects
• Organize, archive, and document multiple quantitative and qualitative databases relevant to various research projects
• Develop and implement data access and security policies and procedures for HIPRC
• Provide methodological expertise on study design and data collection for research grant proposals and other research projects
• Provide technical assistance to HIPRC staff regarding appropriate analytic approaches and techniques
• Conduct, summarize, and present analyses of data
• Assist with the creation of data collection instruments and surveys
• Participate in other HIPRC activities that can draw upon and benefit from the expertise of the Research Core
• Stay informed on new data management techniques and software

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Master’s degree in Quantitative health, social science, Public Health, statistics, or equivalent
• 4-5 years’ of increasingly responsible research data management and data analysis

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Solid understanding of empirical research including quantitative and qualitative analytical research skills.
• Expertise in deterministic and probabilistic linkages of large databases
• Proficiency with relational database, data linkage, and statistical software including one and preferably several) of the following packages: REDCap, SQL, LinkPlus, LinkKing, LinkSolv, Stata, R, SPSS, SAS, ArcGIS, Microsoft Access, NVivo, and Atlas Ti
• Experience with instrument or survey design and development
• Collaborative orientation, flexibility, and the ability to be proactive in decision-making and carrying out work.
• Strong project management skills; Strong organizational abilities, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Able to communicate in articulate, clear and effective manner both verbally and in writing
• Proficient with the Microsoft office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Cooperative team player, able to develop productive relationships with colleagues and collaborators
• Comfortable in a face-paced environment, juggling demands of a busy, frequently changing plan of work in a professional manner; willing to embrace change
