Cedars-Sinai has established a new Human Microbiome Research Institute that will support investigators studying how the microbiome plays a role in human health and disease with key focus areas in: Cancer, Metabolism, Early Life, GI & Liver, and Autoimmunity.

The Human Microbiome Research Institute (HMRI) is an innovation hub and coordinating center for Microbiome Research at Cedars-Sinai. The HMRI facilitates exciting human and animal studies from Cedars-Sinai investigators and external collaborators across multiple areas of research. The applicant will have exposure to these broad areas of study with the central uniting theme being that we wish to understand the role of the microbes in and on our bodies in the progression of these diseases. Under close supervision, the Research Bioinformatician II performs microbiome and microbiology-based bioinformatics analysis and software support for projects submitted to the HMRI. The RB II will analyze and manage microbiome data including 16S, shallow and deep metagenomics, metagenome-assembled genomes, long-read sequencing including hybrid assemblies, comparative genomics, and RNA-seq. Additional expertise in host ‘omics such as metabolomics is a plus. The candidate will have the opportunity to conduct their own research and present at scientific meetings and publish their work, but it is not a requirement.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides microbiome-specific bioinformatics analysis support for projects that requires working on diverse clinical and basic research projects. Mainly responsible for data analysis and software compilations including next generation sequence alignment, polymorphism identification, expression analysis, and visualization tools and browsers.
  • Summarizes data analyses results in the form suitable as the basis for the first draft of written reports, and makes preliminary interpretations of the data.
  • Develops, tests, and maintains modular software pipelines for genome sequencing, assembly, annotation, metagenomic analysis, and genotyping using high-throughput sequencing platforms.
  • Manages data including loading and querying data from database systems, downloading omic data from public repositories, and transforming data to the necessary formats.
  • Helps to identify, evaluate, and incorporate relevant algorithms and software pipelines by reviewing pertinent literatures in bioinformatics and computational biology
  • Interact with other researchers in a friendly and congenial manner, aiding in their understanding of microbiome research and offering guidance in their experiments.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, or Bioinformatics, is required. Ph.D. degree is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience in a microbiology or microbiome research environment.
  • Background in algorithms, scientific computing, and machine learning or statistics. Strong background in R or Python.
  • Working understanding of microbiology, microbiome sciences, or microbial ecology.
  • Proficient in database management, high-performance computing, and the analysis of high-throughput data.
  • Familiar with Unix (Linux) environment, HPC systems, software documentation, query databases, and dashboarding.
  • Experience in manipulating, analyzing, and annotating very large genomic (e.g. NGS) data sets, both in exploratory and pipelined fashions will be a plus.
