The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology embraces education and research on virtually all aspects of biodiversity, including:

  • origins and history of species ranging from bacteria to humans
  • processes by which this diversity has evolved
  • ecological context in which this evolution takes place


These basic sciences underlie some of the most important applied sciences in the world today, such as:

  • global climate change
  • sustainable agriculture
  • emergence and spread of infectious diseases
  • invasive and exotic species
  • conservation biology
  • natural resource management
  • evolution of pesticide and antibiotic resistance

Responsibilities*
  • Collect and analyze samples for environmental and ecological studies including lab and field work in remote areas.  
  • Analyze samples including chemical or biological characterization, followed by entry of data into a computer database.  
  • Perform statistical and graphical analysis on data.  
  • Participate in the research for and preparation of proposals and manuscripts for publication.

Required Qualifications*

A suitable candidate should be pursuing or possess a Bachelor?s degree in a natural science discipline such as biology, chemistry, or environmental sciences, plus the ability to translate, adapt, and apply this knowledge.  The successful candidate should have lab experience in detailed, high-quality biogeochemical analyses of samples, and should show evidence of skill in computer data entry and analysis.  

This position is a lab position that may also require moderately strenuous field work in the Arctic (hiking with full packs over tundra) in inclement weather.


Desired Qualifications*

Desired qualifications include a B.S. degree or undergraduate senior class standing, experience in field collection of environmental samples in remote areas under difficult conditions, and experience in operating and coordinating research sample collection and analysis with minimal supervision.  Experience in aquatic ecology or with the following laboratory instruments is a plus: Total Organic Carbon analyzer, nutrient autoanalyzer, Carbon-Hydrogen-Nitrogen analyzer, ion and gas chromatography, Fluorometer and Spectrophotometer.
