Research Associate

Updated: 2 months ago
Location: Charlottesville, VIRGINIA
Job Type: FullTime

The Bao research group focuses on the membrane biology of cell communication (Bao et al., 2016, NSMB; Bao et al., 2018, Nature; Zhang et al. 2021, Nat Commun; Xiong et al., 2022 Cell). Using a combination of biochemical reconstitution, cell biology and structural approaches, we seek to elucidate how membranes and membrane proteins mediate exocytosis and cell death. Based on the findings from our basic research, we are also interested in reprogramming membrane biology for therapeutic development against human disease. We strive to create a supportive environment that inspires learning, innovation, and passion for scientific discovery. People in the lab will have numerous opportunities to explore their own research interest.  The lab is seeking two postdoctoral Research Associates.

We emphasize rigorous training and open communication, and work as a team to tackle fundamental challenges in membrane biology. The lab is located in the Membrane Biology Center at the University of Virginia, with ample access to well-equipped imaging, flow cytometry and cryogenic electron microscopy cores in the same building. Funded by NIH and UVA, we are looking for highly motivated postdocs in the following areas:

1)            Structural membrane biology using cryoEM/ET;

2)            Unconventional protein secretion;

3)            Nano immune-engineering and mRNA vaccines.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years1 and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Doctoral degree

Previous experiences in biochemistry, structural biology, nanomedicine or cell biology are preferred.

This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

The positions will remain open until filled. The selected applicants will be required to complete a background check prior to their first day of employment per University policy.
