ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
COPH is organized into four Strategic Areas: Global and Planetary Health; Interdisciplinary Science and Practice; Policy, Practice and Leadership; and Population Health Science. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Adams-lab research program is seeking a molecular scientist with bioinformatics expertise to participate in and help lead ongoing malaria research projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
RESEARCH DUTIES: 95 %

  • Provide expert advice and perform cutting-edge next-generation sequencing methods and forward genetic screening for phenotypic profiling of malaria biology.
  • Provide expert advice in developing computational biological research methods in genomics in malaria research.
  • Help coordinate a research team of students and staff to meet collaborative research goals for piggyBac-mediated forward genetics of Plasmodium falciparum.
  • Up to 50 percent FTE may be spent developing independent research grants to exploit these data and methods. Submit as principal investigator one or more applications for a major NIH independent-investigator research grants (e.g., U01, R01, R21).
  • Serve as primary writing assistant to Dr. John Adams in preparation of one or more competitive renewal or new NIH R01 grant applications on which incumbent will serve as key personnel.
  • Contribute as lead author and chief coordinator for computational analysis for saturation mutagenesis of a new Plasmodium spp.


SERVICE DUTIES: 5%

  • Participate in regional and/or national professional organizations and activities


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
The principal duties and obligations of the appointment are to conduct research in accordance with the needs of Dr. Adams' research program and to generate data that will result in significant articles published in highly ranked, peer-reviewed research journals and grant writing.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Minimum Qualifications :

  • PhD in molecular biology, computational biology, or related discipline
  • At least five years relevant research experience
  • Familiarity with P. falciparum biology, drug screens, and chemogenomic profiles
  • Demonstrated expertise through peer-reviewed research publications in molecular biology and RNAseq applications in malaria research.


PREFERRED:
Preferred Qualifications :

  • Demonstrated experience in applying for competitive extramural funding.
  • Ability to serve as key personnel for NIH research grant application.
  • Lead development of new NIH research grant application.
