Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Gillings School’s Department of Nutrition is a global leader in research and training. We are the only nutrition department in the United States situated in both a school of public health and a school of medicine. We engage in innovative work that capitalizes on both these schools’ approaches to health, and thus our department has an unusual breadth of scientific and policy approaches. Our faculty expertise spans from cell to society and moves from discovery to delivery. Our faculty and students work throughout North Carolina and reach populations in China, India, Malawi, Spain and the Philippines, to name a few.
Position Summary
A well-established research lab in the Department of Nutrition (UNC Chapel Hill) is looking for a Research Associate with extensive experience in studies involving in vitro and laboratory mouse models. Specifically, help is needed with mouse model-based and tissue culture-based research in the field of toxicology and nutrition. The candidate will work with Dr. Styblo’s team on research associated with NIH funded projects, including the UNC Superfund Research Program projects, examining adverse effects of environmental exposures and roles of diet/nutrients and obesity as modulators of these effects. The candidate is expected to maintain mouse colonies, monitor food and water consumption, as well as body weight and composition. He/she will also assist with assessment of metabolic phenotypes (indicators of diabetes and CVD) and with sample collection and analyses, including gene transcription, DNA methylation, and protein analyses. He/she will also be required to perform or assist with tissue culture experiments using a variety of mammalian cell lines and primary cells. His/her duties will also include maintaining of laboratory instruments and equipment, and supervising undergraduate students involved in lab research.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Hands-on experience with laboratory mice and tissue culture is required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
BS or MS in Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Nutrition, Toxicology or Genetics is preferred. Knowledge of analytical chemistry is a plus.
