Position Summary

The UNC Institute for the Environment has a three-part mission:
(1) To strengthen environmental research capacity across UNC by supporting a multi-disciplinary community of scholars that enhances collaboration, increases sharing of knowledge, and identifies solutions to the world’s critical environmental problems.
(2) To work in partnership across UNC and with external partners to coordinate and deliver 21st century educational programs that provide students with the experience and skills to thrive in a growing global economy.
(3)To put new environmental knowledge into action by engaging and serving communities, here in North Carolina and around the world.

The Research Associate is a permanent position in the Center for Public Engagement with Science (CPES), the informal science education and community engagement unit of the UNC Institute for the Environment (IE).

This position will be responsible for designing, implementing, and funding environmental science or environmental health programming, based on research conducted within UNC IE and other multi-investigator environmental research centers at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

-Design, implement and evaluate educational programming for public health professionals and formal/informal educators on topics ranging from childhood lead poisoning prevention to water resources;
-Manage research translation and science communication for a multi-investigator research center focused on how toxic metals affect human health; and
-Manage undergraduate internship program, placing up to 20 students in environmental internships each semester.

This position may require some weekend and evening work and the ability to travel regionally and/or nationally to implement programming.

Educational Requirements

Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental health, or related discipline required. Prefer undergraduate degree in environmental science or environmental health. Certification or coursework in GIS also desired.

Qualifications and Experience

This position requires at least four (4) years of employment experience designing and conducting environmental science or environmental health education activities with public health professionals and community audiences. Experience managing an undergraduate internship program also is required.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

-Experience conducting environmental science or environmental health research, including analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.
-Experience evaluating project outcomes and summarizing for publication.
-Excellent communication skills, including experience with ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro/ArcGIS, WordPress, and Adobe Creative Suite.
