Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences (EMES) provides instruction and conducts research into the physical, chemical, and biologic processes that operate within the Earth and its oceans. Research seeks to understand how the dynamic interplay among these processes shape the Earth’s surface, govern environmental change, generate natural hazards, supply energy and resources, and sustain life. The department has a strong tradition of undergraduate students conducting independent and guided research as part of their training.
Position Summary
The position provides primary support for the supervisor’s laboratory functions. Equipment and instrumentation associated with the lab are largely deployed off-campus and report information via internet or wireless communications. The Research Associate bears primary responsibility for processing, archive, analysis and reporting from the equipment, and will lead or organize software development in support of equipment operations and or data management and data analysis. The Research Associate may also share responsibility for instrument development (when needed), operations and maintenance, or managing these efforts through agreements. At present the instrumentation to be supported are a series of high-frequency radars along the NC coastline, and moorings of current profilers and CTDs. The lab also participates in glider operations in the southeast US. The Research Associate may lead efforts in any of the areas, including publications, acting as an independent investigator, initiating projects and products that benefit the laboratory or the supervisor’s overall research. The Research Associate will train and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the use of instrumentation, data access and analysis.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
M.S. in Oceanography or equivalent expertise in a natural science, data science or computer science.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Minimum 2 years demonstrated experience in carrying out the principal functions, especially working with high-frequency radar surface current mapping systems. Expertise in programming in appropriate languages or software applications on multiple platforms (e.g. python, matlab, work on MAC, PC, UNIX), and prior experience in managing efforts through agreements (contractual or grant).
