Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Comprehensive Oral Health houses several disciplines including, Periodontology, Dental Hygiene, Comprehensive Dentistry, Operative Dentistry/BioMaterials, Prosthodontics, and Endodontics. The Periodontology discipline focuses on the prevention and treatment of gum disease, as well as the management of gum and tissue inflammation resulting from existing dental conditions
Position Summary
The Marchesan Lab focuses on interrogating periodontal disease pathogenesis, specifically on how different innate immune players drive gingival breakdown and periodontal tissue destruction. Our overall goal is to study mechanisms of periodontal bone loss and translate novel therapeutics into the clinic. This position will design, manage, and execute experiments in accordance with the lab’s focus. This will include optimizing assays, validating drug delivery efficacy/efficiency, and follow-up studies. The Research Associate is expected to present research findings at meetings and, consequently, co-author papers and grants developed in the lab. The researcher will also assist with manuscript preparation and grant writing. Will work collaboratively with other researchers in the lab and collaborative labs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The applicant must possess good problem-solving and organizational skills, be a team player, and have the skills to maintain standard laboratory operations. 
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS 
* Must have previous experience in cellular and molecular biology (working with DNA and RNA, cloning, sequencing, quantitative PCR, western blots). 
* Must be able to work with human and mouse samples.
* Ability to use and maintain standard lab equipment. 
* Experience with ordering, invoice tracking, and maintaining laboratory stocks.
* Must be able to work in a diverse, collaborative team.
* Previous experience with cell culture, mouse models, and human tissue handling.
* Molecular biology experience.
