Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Launched in 2013, the Department of Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Including the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL) and the graduate program in material sciences, Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serve the entire UNC community.

Position Summary

The Research Associate in Professor Jinsong Huang’s group in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences at UNC Chapel Hill is part of a dynamic research group with focus on perovskite materials and devices. The Huang group has state of the art facility with recently renovated labs, including four research rooms for material synthesis, material characterization, device fabrication, scaling up, optical and electronic measurements. The Huang group provides support for personal career development for a win-win scenario. The candidate will work on improving the performance of perovskite solar cells by understanding the materials, interfaces and device fabrication. Although device performance is the goal of the research in many projects, fundamental understanding is the soul of this group.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The candidate is expected to have evidence of academic excellence in inorganic chemistry, material science, or solid-state physics, an aptitude for troubleshooting lab instruments, the ability to work both independently and in teams, and be detail-oriented and self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The candidate should possess independent thinking capability, be willing to take on a wide variety of roles, be able to identify potential hazards in the laboratory and undertake safe work practices, have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, be able to present information concisely, be able to multi-task and set priorities to meet deadlines, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to work with a diverse group of people, have training in physical material science, physical chemistry, and photo physics. The candidate should have direct hands-on experience in fabricating high efficiency (>22%) perovskite solar cells and perovskite minimodules, design the material composition and process to make solar cells more efficient and stable.
