Job Description

The Kaufman Veterinary Entomology in the Department of Entomology focuses on the development of new pest management tools for livestock, companion animal and wildlife systems. The successful applicant will bring an expert level of experience to the position and understand the demands of supporting research in a fast-paced environment. This person must be professional, enjoy working in a high-volume environment, and be able to apply strong organizational skills while being flexible in their daily routine.


Responsibilities:
-Lead the insect collection and processing component of a multidisciplinary study focused on improving human and livestock health.

-Collected insects will be processed in the laboratory and be provided to project partners.

-Assist with aspects of arthropod rearing (biting flies, mosquitoes, ticks), bioassays, and field studies, as well as provide support for other research projects in the laboratory.

-Responsible for the maintenance of cleanliness in the lab, lab equipment and inventory and ordering of lab supplies.

-Perform other job-related duties as required.


Required Education and Experience:
-Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
-Two years of related professional experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

-Master’s Degree in a relevant field

-Minimum of 2 years laboratory experience (graduate research may qualify as experience)

-Experience with cell cultures, histology, molecular biology techniques (PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, qPCR, …)

-Livestock or wildlife handling experience

-Insect colony rearing experience

-Pesticide bioassays

-Experience working with arthropods

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Ability to multi-task and ability to work cooperatively with others.

-Knowledge of lab room preparation and lab techniques and safety.

-Proficient in Microsoft Office

-Exceptional organizational skills.

-Ability to stand/sit at work bench for extended periods of time

-Ability to work occasionally for extended time in hot, outdoor environments in remote areas

-Ability to work with animals in a research environment.

-Ability to travel overnight and weekends occasionally for work associated with research

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Ability and willingness to work with livestock animals and live arthropods.

-Biological research experience including undergraduate experience.
