The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Associate to serve as a member of the Molecular and Cellular Medicine team. This person must be professional, enjoy working in a high-volume environment and be able to apply strong organizational skills while being flexible in their daily routine. Required Education:

  • Appropriate Bachelor's degree

Required Experience:

  • Two years of relevant professional experience

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, Matlab
  • Ability to learn new tools and content quickly and independently
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong analytical abilities and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with software development best practices (e.g., unit testing, version control)
  • Familiarity with inferential statistics and machine learning

Preferred Education:

  • Masters degree in Biology or Computational Biology with coursework or relevant experience in computer science and statistics.
  • Training in statistics, and programming experience in a UNIX/Linux environment using programming languages such as Python, R, and/or Perl is required.

Preferred Experience:

  • At least two years' professional experience in data collection and analysis.
  • Experience in analysis of genomis /trancriptomic /epigenomic data including RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq.
  • Experience in working with high-performance computing environment
  • Experience in data management and developing data-processing pipelines
  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in computational biology and ability to devise innovative analytical approaches to high-volume genomic, epigenomic, and gene expression data.
  • Strong work ethic and critical thinking abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – in English – and capable of working within a team of wet and dry lab researchers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform hypothesis driven computational research with a clear understanding and use of controls.
  • Use computational methods to analyze large-scale sequencing data and formulate quantitative models.
  • Implement, apply and evaluate tools to process, integrate and visualize high throughput sequencing datasets
  • Interpret the data and explain the results in research discussion.
  • Development and dissemination of statistical methodology, software development, and application to large-scale genetic epidemiological studies.
  • Specific areas of interest include multiclass regression model, nonparametric modeling and methods, multiple hypothesis testing and machine learning.
  • Explore and bring novel approaches and ideas to their project by collaborating with other labs at TAMU and other collaborators
  • Provide support to lab members and collaborators in designing experiments and analyzing dataset
  • Maintain, update software on TAMU cluster for the group. Organize data backups periodically.
  • Contribute to our code base and to keep your own code in a github (or equivalent) repository with version control
  • Present their work at group meetings and write up their work for publication.
  • Other duties as assigned
