The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a part-time Research Associate - Karpac Lab to serve as a member of the Cell Biology and Genetics team. Job Summary: The Research Associate, under general direction, will perform normal lab management and research technician duties in order to maintain a laboratory that primarily uses the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as model organism for basic science research, and work on specific projects related to current work in the lab (i.e. using Drosophila genetics to address questions regarding cell signaling and molecular/cellular biology).

Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree

  • Two years of relevant professional experience. (Master’s degree is equivalent to two years of experience)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment

  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data, and perform other computer related tasks

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System guidelines

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with training in genetics and microscopy

  • Previous experience with general molecular biology (such as PCR / Western blotting / Molecular cloning), animal husbandry, and routine laboratory procedures (such as autoclaving and waste disposal)

Responsibilities:

  • Drosophila Insect Husbandry - Perform insect food preparation, insect stock maintenance, and routine insect genetics; keep detailed genetic records of insect stocks              

  • General Lab Management and Maintenance - Manage laboratory including general ordering, insect animal husbandry, and maintaining safety and animal protocols.         

  • Conduct and Coordinate Experiments in Support of Various Research Projects - Conduct and coordinate experiments in support of various research projects and operation of research equipment. Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques of routine research; keep detailed records of data. Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, technical evaluation of research experiments, and basic laboratory management. Perform other duties as assigned.
