This position is located in Shorter, AL.
The E. V. Smith Research Center is seeking candidates for a Research Associate. This position will report to the Associate Director at the Farm Services Unit. Job responsibilities may also be assigned at the Field Crops, Plant Breeding, and Beef Units.

Essential Functions
Specific duties may vary based upon unit needs and may include the following:
• Coordinates with associate director(s) regarding all aspects of research projects including proposed experimental design, plot lay-out, planting, harvesting plans, and data collection for row crops, small fruits, vegetables, forages and pecans.
• Operates various pieces of farm machinery including tractors, planters, sprayers, spreaders, and harvesters; possesses and uses an extensive knowledge of technology-based equipment related to precision agriculture.
• Troubleshoots issues, makes repairs on farm equipment, precision agriculture technology, and irrigation equipment. (tractors, sprayers, harvesters etc.).
• Scouts crops for pest, disease and weed pressure, and makes spray recommendations; performs pesticide calculations, applies pest/weed control and/or advises sprayer operator.
• Performs routine and preventive maintenance of building and grounds; makes repairs and performs preventative maintenance on lawn equipment, chain saws etc.
• Assists, instructs, and trains others with regards to implementing farm and research practices to better suit unique situations at the unit(s).
• Records important data throughout experiments.
• Procures supplies and other items needed for daily operations.
• Records weather data from multiple locations on the property. This data is used in making decisions related to ongoing agricultural practices.
• Assists with field days, extension, and community activities; works with Associate Director to manage logistics to conduct workshops.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Level I: Masters degree in discipline appropriate to position; no experience required.
Level II: Masters degree in discipline appropriate to position and 2 years of relevant experience.
Level III: Masters degree in discipline appropriate to position and 4 years of relevant experience.
Level IV: Masters degree in discipline appropriate to position and 6 years of relevant experience.
*Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.
Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications


Minimum Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of farm equipment and safety.
  • Ability to count and use measuring equipment accurately.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Minimum Technology Skills
Minimum License and Certifications
Commercial Applicator’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of the start date.

Desired Qualifications
Experience and/or knowledge of row crop production and ability to operate farm equipment is desired.
