Job Summary
The College of Pharmacy invites applications for a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, fixed-term, Research Associate or Senior Research Associate 1 position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head as appropriate.
The Sahay Lab at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Oregon State University is developing non-viral vectors for gene therapy. Lipid based nanoparticles were pivotal for the success of mRNA vaccines The current project aims to develop targeted nanotherapeutics for prime editing for treatment of inherited genetic diseases. This position will utilize expertise in nanomedicine and perform studies that will enable preclinical IND studies. The incumbent will be responsible for working with chemists, biologists, and clinicians and help in translational activity with the Center for Drug Delivery of Imaging (CIDDI). The lab is comprised of an interdisciplinary team and supports collaborations with formulation scientists, biologists, engineers and clinicians, in addition to career development of team members and growth as independent scientists. The lab is located at the SW Waterfront of the Robertson Life Sciences Building in Portland, OR that houses scientists from OSU, OHSU and PSU.

Key Responsibilities
60% Research:
  • Develop a translational plan that can lead to IND manufacturing of mRNA based technology, especially for lung and eye applications.
  • Establish CMC based applications for initiation of clinical trials.
  • Perform PK/PD studies.
  • Write grant applications that will enable studies that can translate nanomedicine to humans.
  • Work closely with undergraduates, postdocs, and graduate students in the lab and participate in training.

15% Laboratory Maintenance:
  • Maintain lab equipment and online database of materials.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment and oversee lab safety and maintain lab safety as deemed necessary by the principal investigator.

25% Reports, Manuscript, & Proposal Preparation:
  • Maintain detailed records of data obtained in the laboratory. Prepare reports and manuscripts. Write independent research grants.
What You Will Need
Minimum Qualifications (All Ranks)
  • PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and/or synthetic chemistry.
  • Strong background in chemistry, polymer chemistry, and/or lipid chemistry.
  • Ability to effectively analyze data and communicate with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences in both written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience with chemical synthesis and characterization.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

For Appointment at the Rank of Research Associate
  • Record of publication in drug delivery and nanomedicine.

For Appointment at the Rank of Senior Research Associate I
  • Four years of professional research experience and a strong record of publication and presentation in drug delivery and nanomedicine.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience with multistep organic chemistry.
  • Industrial background.
  • Experience working with LNPs and mRNA based platforms.
  • Experience with NMR, LC-MS, MS-MS.
  • Knowledge of materials for nucleic acid delivery and nanomedicine for ophthalmic application.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The work will take place on the OHSU campus both at the South Waterfront (RLSB) and Marquam Hill facilities.
