The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

The Center for Voice Intelligence and Security (CVIS) at LTI is seeking a dedicated Research Associate to contribute to cutting-edge projects in the field of embodied Artificial Intelligence (AI). This role involves the design, assembly, and implementation of 3D printed physically mobile robots, interfacing with large multimodal AI systems, and developing AI capabilities for edge devices. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic team environment to push the boundaries of AI for voice-based intelligent communication with robots.

Core Responsibilities:                     

  • Design and Assembly of Physically Mobile Robots: Leverage advanced 3D printing technologies to design and assemble innovative physically mobile robots. This includes conceptualization, prototyping, and testing to meet project objectives.
  • Interfacing with AI Systems: Work with large multimodal AI systems to integrate advanced AI capabilities with physical robotics platforms. This involves programming, data handling, and system optimization to ensure seamless operation.
  • AI Development for Edge Devices: Build and deploy AI functionalities on edge devices, enabling intelligent robotics applications. Focus on efficiency and performance optimization for real-time processing and autonomy.
  • Collaboration and Documentation: Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and industry partners. Maintain comprehensive documentation of design processes, system integrations, and experimental results.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI and robotics technology. Participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences as part of the professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in robotics design and assembly, preferably with expertise in 3D printing technologies.
  • Proficiency in programming languages relevant to AI and robotics, such as Python, C++, or ROS.
  • Experience with AI models and algorithms, especially in the context of multimodal systems and edge computing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a creative approach to overcoming technical challenges.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
