Primary Purpose of Department
The mission of the Department of Special Education and Child Development is to prepare highly effective and ethical professionals who have a positive impact on children, youth, families, community, and schools and who are successful in urban and other diverse settings. This mission is accomplished through teaching, research, and community engagement that lead to improved practice and by working in partnership with schools, communities, and university colleagues.

  • Provide instruction at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels that models research-validated best practice and challenges learners to aspire to excellence.
  • Generate and synthesize knowledge through quality research that informs the preparation programs of the Department.
  • Provide genuine and meaningful service to the public schools and other service providers that inform the preparation programs of the Department.

Primary Purpose of Position
This position will be funded as part of UNC Charlotte’s work related to these two projects. The Research Associate will contribute to all aspects of UNC Charlotte’s work, primarily focused on on-site recruitment and specific data collection efforts for the partnership with AIR. In recruiting a total (for the entire study) of 16 – 20 school districts across the nation, this individual will coordinate work with recruiters from the partner entities (AIR and Social Policy Research Associates) and the other project staff at UNC Charlotte. This role may also coordinate communication between selected districts and the research (AIR and UNC Charlotte) and provider (University of Kansas) teams to support quality implementation of the research study. Related to NTACT: C the position will support project evaluation and resource dissemination activities in support of the work with state agencies.
The RA will work with Dr. Catherine Fowler, the principal investigator in these efforts.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The employee will report to Dr. Catherine Fowler and will be a project team member for both the NTACT: C and AIR transition study projects. The individual will regularly collaborate with other team members at UNC Charlotte and partner universities and organizations. The employee’s principal responsibilities will be to support the NTACT: C project director by assisting in the coordination of project evaluation reporting and resource development and dissemination. Regarding the AIR transition study, the primary responsibilities will include implementation support to school district personnel in selected districts implementing the intervention. For both projects, activities will include virtual and in-person meeting facilitation, and frequent oral and written communications with district personnel, partner entities, and intervention instructors to coordinate intervention
readiness and implementation activities. The employee will participate in other professional activities as assigned, related to the two projects.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s or Doctorate in the field of special education or other area in the field of general education, school counseling, educational psychology, or rehabilitative counseling
  • Experience working with school districts and/or community service providers and/or families of individuals with disabilities
  • Experience in data collection at the school, district, and/or state levels
  • Experience with survey development software and basic competence with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience in conducting experimental research
  • Experience working with secondary youth with disabilities
  • Experience in collaborating with school personnel to facilitate intervention implementation and monitoring data collection processes
  • Experience providing professional development to schools/districts/states to support the implementation of evidence-based practices
  • Experience in teaching at the K-12 and postsecondary level
  • Knowledge of interventions or intervention components under study
  • Knowledge of laws governing special education (i.e., Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004) and vocational rehabilitation (i.e., Rehabilitation Act, amended by the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act, 2014) are relevant to secondary students and youth with disabilities or other relevant federal regulations (e.g., Carl Perkins Act, Elementary and Secondary Education Act).
