Job Description


The Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) at Virginia Tech comprises over 10 faculty members supervising around 100 international graduate students and visiting scholars conducting research in large state-of-the-art laboratory facilities with millions of dollars in research contracts and global industry consortium of over 90 companies, and with operations in both Blacksburg and Arlington, Virginia. This position will be primarily located in Blacksburg with travel to Arlington, as needed, to attend meetings.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct assigned research and technology transfer activities under coordination with other Center faculty.
- Contribute to research conceptualization and technical proposal development in collaboration with Center faculty.
- Lead, independently and in collaboration, new research technical proposal development with industry and government.
- Engage industry seeking to grow the CPES industry consortium and partnership program.
- Supervise and coordinate the work of junior research faculty and researchers and support personnel and assist in advising of graduate and undergraduate students.
- Devise new approaches to solve problems as well as plan, execute, and coordinate all phases of research related work.
- Perform conventional and complex techniques and apply non-traditional approaches and higher levels of problem solving for research.
- Lead and support communication with sponsors on project progress and intermediate results.
- Prepare reports, technical documentation, and technical papers and make presentations to sponsors and other technical meetings.


Required Qualifications

- PhD in electrical engineering in the area of power electronics.
- Demonstrated record in power electronics, electrical machines, and motor drive research with high impact factor publications.
- Demonstrated record in power electronics, electrical machines, and motor drive research and development in industry.
- Demonstrated leadership and strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as within research teams.


Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in research, design, development, and implementation of wide-bandgap power semiconductor based high-frequency high-power electronic power converters, power electronics measurement equipment, and embedded hardware and software for digital control and signal processing in power electronics, especially in the areas listed under “Project Description” above.
- Experience in research, design, development, and implementation of advanced electrical machines and integrated motor drives, and experience in the design and implementation of digital vector control schemes for the said machines.
- Experience in the design of Silicon-Carbide power semiconductors, from device packaging, to gate-driver, power supplies, and various printed-circuit-board (PCB) technology.
- Experience in the design of multilevel power converters for improved power quality, reduced electromagnetic interference, improved efficiency and improved power density.
- Experience in digital control system for distributed control applications in power electronics systems with multiple converter or power-cell-based circuit topologies and architectures.
